Open source #1: Safex development, privacy and building a real economy

I went live from San Francisco to talk about the work going into Safex, why I’m building it on its own blockchain, and what still needs to be done to bring the marketplace into the browser.

Watch the full broadcast, about 29 minutes:

Here’s what I covered, with approximate times:

  • 00:38: The engineering behind Safex. Building the web wallet, working with Safex’s transaction signing, and porting C++ functionality into JavaScript. I explain where AI helped with research and development, and the engineering I still had to do to make everything work.

  • 03:13: Why Safex has its own blockchain. My concerns about transaction visibility, front running, and the incentives surrounding EVM tokens. I explain why I have no intention of turning Safex into an EVM project, and why Safex Cash remains the medium of exchange.

  • 07:39: Bringing the marketplace into the browser. The next interface needs to work for vendors managing their businesses and for people who simply want to shop. There is substantial work involved in making those functions accessible.

  • 10:28: Privacy, security and monetary supply. I discuss concerns about inflation vulnerabilities in other projects, the importance of checking the code, and the reasoning behind Safex Cash’s mining distribution over time.

  • 15:44: Swap expansion and community growth. Plans for USDC and ERC20 conversion routes into Safex, the new wallets I’m seeing, and why introducing other people to the tools matters. I also give a brief update on the SFT ticker trademark work at around 21:02.

  • 22:42: How SuperSync works. I explain the approach of repackaging blockchain data to reduce what a wallet needs to download and process, without changing the blockchain’s consensus rules.

  • 25:19: Checking the work produced with AI. Asking questions, challenging incomplete answers, and making sure the software actually does the job. Getting an answer is only part of the work.

My focus is getting useful tools into people’s hands and building a marketplace economy that keeps working over time. That is what I’m putting the effort into.
